Designed according to the IPX-7 waterproof standards, the DeLorme Earthmate PN-20, with rubberized covering, is ideal for use in adverse conditions. Expect to study to make it work, but it does work well The PN-20 GPS does exactly what it's supposed to do, but don't expect it to be very intuitive and easy to learn. I don't know if its Big Brothers (the PN-40 and the PN-60) are any easier to use or if they just have more features - and cost a whole lot more.
But the PN-20 takes a lot of learning before it starts to produce good results. You can download or watch videos on U-Tube on how to work with it. You can also download the operation manual from the Delorme web site if it isn't included in your package. There is an excellent review and How-to in some kind of hiking magazine.
Just search for PN-20 and Delorme and you'll find it. Considering the difference in price, you'll save hundreds of dollars by choosing the PN-20 and then learning how it ticks. Always remember that no GPS i s a substitute for a map and compass because the field of view on the screen is, at most, 2X2 inches whereas the map shows you the whole area.

Also, you don't need batteries for a map and compass. But as a supplement to those old, trusty tools, this is an excellent adjunct. One last point that is very important. The slot for the Secure Digital (SD) card is under the batteries. You need to GENTLY touch the top of the plastic slot that the SD card goes into and it will pop up slightly so you can tenderly lift it up with a fingernail. Please DO NOT pry it up or you will break it. It is very fragile and the wrong pull and it's ruined.
Study it like you were going to cut a diamond before you even touch it and you'll see what I mean. Whoever designed it must have had very delicate fingers because it sure isn't made for a mountain man. Enjoy your new GPS - give it a new home and you'll be glad that you did. The Topo 8 map software that comes with it is worth the price by itself. Have had better luck with Garmin units.
I brought a Pn-20 used from ebay and as much as I would like to rave about it I can't. I own various Garmin and Magellan hand held units; I use them for hiking and Search and Rescue purposes. I use the units in conjunction with a compass and topo maps; I pull UTM's from maps and enter them into the units and do it often.
I can say this about the Delorme: It is built well and it fits great in your hand. It is really designed well and just looks good. The Topo software that comes with the unit is excellent, better then the Garmin software, however it is more complex then the Garmin software. I have a connection issue with the used unit I purchased thus I have not been able to use it with the unit.
However it is not as accurate as any of the Garmin units I own. It is often off by 10 o r 30 meters when compared to the Garmin's.
It also has this odd quirk - when I try to edit a position, it won't let me save the new coordinate, it reverts to the previous entry. Also, it is slower to acquire a fix then my other units.
Maybe the newer Pn40 or 60 is better; the design has great potential.
Hi Brian, One of the main differences between road maps and topo maps (paper and electronic) is typically that the topos have much more comprehensive hydrology (water). They typically include more, and smaller, details and are more accurate. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to use your SA maps in Topo. But I've seen dumber design decisions than that, like Microsoft's hardcore ignorance of backwards compatibility in Streets&Trips user-saved maps. You could easily get the answer to both of these questions by emailing DeLorme and asking. I've found them to be quite responsive.
I haven't always like the answers I got but they were always prompt and honest. You have to respect that.ken. By the way, I have both Streets & Trips 2010, and Street Atlas 2009.
I just bought S&T last weekend, so I haven't gotten used to it, yet, but it seems to be O.K., so far. They have a very similar look, but there are some differences, too, of course.
I hope the DeLorme TopoUSA 8.0 will accept my S/A map files. If it does, then it will be great!
Brian Hi OldBridgez, Sorry i'm a little late to the game on this one but, yes you can import SA files into Topo USA 8.0 by clicking on the Map Files tab, Add, Draw files, Route Files.Jason Team DeLorme.
